Bought one in college. It's a funny lever action rifle, a Marlin 336 chambered in 30-30 Winchester. It's a lovely looking gun and a pleasure to shoot, but I haven't shot it in years. I mainly bought it because I was into a "gun fad" at the time that I've since fallen out of. I still support the Second Amendment overall, but now I'm a lot more willing to consider gun control policies aimed at reducing gun violence. I've also made it a point to avoid discussions about the gun debate entirely, since they inevitably devolve into total shit-shows where each side is screaming at each other, entirely fueled by "Muh Feels".

If it feels good in your hands it will be a good choice 99% of the time. Buy a 9mm, cheap ammo, light recoil, great defensive loads. I own and CC a P320 Compact Carry, it is a bit larger (Full size grip with a compact barrel) but with a nice shirt is invisible.
Some great brands to look at, with great reputations.
SIG (P320, P250 and P2022 are all in your price range, though used high end models can be had for <$700)
Glock (17 19 26)
CZ (any 75 model, though a SP01 or D model would be great)
Walther (Can't ever go wrong with them)
HK (Again, you may have to go used to find some in your price range put some of their new models can be had cheap)

Look up the "polymer80 spectre" and a cheap drill press. Buy a complete slide, and a lower parts kit along with that and now you have a gun.
Everything you need can be shipped right to your door so long as you aren't a felon or some other disqualifying factor. No paperwork or background check required though.

My RM owns a P250 Sub Compact, it has the best DAO trigger I have ever shot. Obviously it isn't great for target shooting, but it is miles ahead of the SCCY CPX-1/2, LCP, Bodyguard 380, Old LC9, and nearly every DAO Semi I have shot or fingerblasted.
It is also 100-200 cheaper than a P320 depending on how Jewish your LGS is.
I chose the P320 Carry, but if I were going to get a Sub-Compact for CC the P250SC will be my first choice.

I'm 170 at 5'11", and the pistol is nearly full size. That is the best place for me to carry, and it never prints. 1 is uncomfortable because beer belly, 3 the handle sticks out unless I have a jacket on. I can drive with the pistol there, I can bend over and twist my torso without it printing or having the handle stick out so I carry there.
