Perhaps, but no Christian power in modern times has been willing to fight to take it and rule it. Only the Jews and Muslims have. And the Jews have been, in practice, the better rulers for Christians.
Israel proper is the Catholic Church, and exists in every church. Maybe one day a Christian state in Jerusalem and the land of the current State of Israel will be a jon-LARPy possibility. Until then, in practice, Jewish rule of the Christian Holy sites is the best option and the only defence against their destruction by Muslims.
