What does the United States gain from this relationship with Cuba? What does Obama believe he is achieving?

Democracy and economic liberalization in Cuba

Two things I agree with Obama on and I rarely agree with Obama on anything. Sadly, I don't think he will accomplish those things
>>
Is this "normalization of relations" with Cuba supposed to be a counter-punch to Putin's land grab in Ukraine?

More trade. The US and Cuba lose out on billions every year.
>>
Obama has single-handedly damaged UK/US relations (from the UK viewpoint) by being a total prick towards us over the years, hence it's quite funny to me that he's concerning himself with Cuba.
>>

He's trying to salvage his lame duck presidency by being the president who brought freedom to Cuba

Op,

The old policy wasn't working. The Castro regime has outlasted 9 American presidents.

Let's open up the market, send in Uner and Taylor Swift and see how long they last.

This is what Obama is doing.
>>
Ha, Castro is getting pissed
>>
castro is fucking retarded lol

anyone else watching this?

Communism. Better known as the "NWO". Funny that New World Order is very old, has been tried and has failed every time, is genocidally against facts evidence and reality, and is controlled by self-chosen parasites.

A reporter asked him about political prisoners and he got pissed and acted like they don't have any.

Some reporter, Jim Acosta or something, asked about Cuban political prisoners being arrested in Cuba. Castro was obviously flustered saying "Give me a list of them. Give me names. The US doesn't have Cuban political prisoners?!?". He could barely get his headset on he was so upset.

It's this one OP. Trying to bolster his achievements to make his presidency look effective / good. Gotta secure that place in history

Fidel has one foot in the grave. Raul already looks to be suffering from advanced age-related diseases.

Something else is going on with this. There must be more to it. Why enter into a friendship with a Communist country when its leadership is in a state of flux? Fidel dies, Raul takes over. Raul dies, who is next in line? Something stinks here.

I believe the ultimate goal is to get the IMF in there, get Cuba hooked on debt, and then manipulate its economy to the point of riots and revolution and a call for democracy. Poof! Just like that, we stole Cuba from the Russian sphere of influence. They take Ukraine. We take Cuba.

Their medical system is world-renowned for being one of the best. Apparently they even have a vaccine for lung cancer. I guess that would make sense considering Fidel smoked Cohibas for nearly 40 years and never got cancer.

They wouldn't let us manipulate their economy. They've survived this long with complete sanctions and no diplomatic contact.

>Their medical system is world-renowned for being one of the best.

I still call bullshit on this. Where are all the people going to Cuba for treatment, especially the rich?

Same with bullshit that you can fly to Europe or Asia, get a procedure, and fly back for less than it would cost in the US for the procedure.
>>
>>68252032
And at least Obama realizes he can't do shit without Congress
>>
>>68249625
He's a socialist, Obama is a socialist.
>>
Castro is fucking autistic lel
>>
>>68252041
Well of course Americans can't travel there, and it'd still be cheaper to get treated in your own country if you have universal healthcare.
>>
>>68249625
Obama wants to be seen as a "transformative" President, so he is trying to transform our relationship with Cuba. Like the Iran deal, this is purely a vanity project for Obama. He sees it as part of his legacy that he established relations with two nations currently considered outside our sphere of influence.

There is no real upside to this for the nation as a whole.
>>
>>68252340
So why don't Canadians or Europeans go to Cuba? Koreans or Chinese? They all have money to afford the trip.

Even Michael Moore found a way to get to Cuba with a dozen or so people for treatment.
>>
>>68252041
It has a life expectancy on par with many first world countries. Ranked in the top 40 by the WHO and this is all while spending a fraction per capita of countries like the USA.
>>
>>68252361
His legacy is shit, this really is the only way to try to save it.

But nothing will happen because he needs to go through Congress, he's finally realizing this.

Human rights Obama talks about too. HA.
>>
What it comes down to is that Cuban immigrants typically vote conservative, this is very important to note especially in a place like Florida .
The way it is now a Cuban can ask for asylum and with few questions asked be allowed to stay and vote here as a permanent resident (and after a couple of years they can become a citizen)

By normalizing relations with Cuba, future Cubans will no longer be granted asylum. They will be forced to apply for a visa or formally apply for LPR status. This is what Obama hopes to gain from Cuba , a stemming of the flow of Cuban asylum seekers
>>
>>68252522
Maybe they have little violence and little money to spend
>>
>>68251867
Autism is autism is autism
>>
President Raul Castro boasted (and scolded the US) because they pay their women equal pay for equal work.
>>
>>68252501
We would have to pay for healthcare there, it's cheaper here.

Most European countries also have universal healthcare, so it's not worth it to travel to Cuba.

Koreans, Chinese, and other Asian countries have pretty advanced healthcare, so there's no reason to go to Cuba.

Michael Moore had to take a boat from Florida to get to Cuba. Not many people can afford that in the US.

The wealthy in the US already have access to great medical treatment.
>>
There he goes again claiming no Cuban political prisoners
>>
>>68252859
>Not many people can afford that in the US.

But they can take this hit on medical bills in the US?

>So why don't Canadians or Europeans go to Cuba?

They do:

http://www.ctvnews.ca/health/health-headlines/cuba-turns-to-medical-tourism-as-revenue-generator-1.1397531

Healthcare is provided in Canada, but for elective surgery it is cheaper to go to Cuba or even Asia.

America is far more expensive and malpractice is more rampant (especially for things like breast augmentation). America went from 98,000 cases of fatal malpractice in 1984 to over 400,000 annually. The cost cutting and limited doctor-patient access you find in most American facilities makes them undesirable for foreigners seeking medical care.

For top end cancer care America is tough to beat though. Wealthy people around the world do travel to the premium medical facilities and some Canadians do visit places like the mayo Clinics.
