My eyedoctor told me that I'm nearsighted because I don't go outside enough. Basically, the eyes work very hard to look at things that are closeby (like a computer monitor), and the eyes basically lock in that position. Eventually they can't relax to look at distant objects, thus myopia. To prevent nearsightedness, you basically want to look at distant objects frequently.
