It's honestly this, unleashing nuclear weapons showed the entire world what we had up our sleeves on top of a quick victory. The actual use of nuclear weapons in warfare was probably going to be an inevitability as it brought an end to conventional warfare on a massive scale and lead to all the shit we do now instead. The destruction that these weapons caused struck fear into the rest of the world and it became a massive deterrent against attacking any nation capable of defending itself in that way. Japan just happened to be a prime target to set the first example with. In a hypothetical situation, if we had nuked somebody else first and they knew what we could do to them, I seriously doubt they would have wanted to fight us.
