How come the richest and most developed countries ended up being EXCLUSIVELY in cold climates? I'm talking about Europe + Great Britain(and it's colonies which don't count since GB held their hand all the way to the top).
It's not natural resources, since shit countries also have lots of them(though didn't learn to use them until much later).
Even looking at Europe, the farther north you go, the better it becomes(Norway/Sweden vs Italy/Spain).
Shouldn't the northerners be at a huge disadvantage since the climate basically puts productivity to zero 4-8 months a year, also lots of energy used to heat instead of for other things.

I have heard an unsourced hypothesis that cold climates select for larger bodies, long term planning and better anger control in human populations.
Especially 4 season climates select for the above.
Too cold and there is little to work with. Too hot and the climate selects for quick aggression and lack of anger control. Also, hot climates cant tolerate more sociopaths/psychopaths because food is easier to obtain if you can fight effectively.
Those two disorders cause massive amounts of social destruction and keep the hot climate populations from effectively organizing to accomplish various tasks.

Imagine what would have happened if Russia would have allied with germany in WW1 (Scandinavian countries would probably russian today, Germany #1 or #2 world power, depending on what the US would have done).

Regarding the development of countries closer to the equator/africa/middle east:
warmer weather makes life easier, less challenges. Major points for africa for instance are the availability of food which stays rather constant during the year. The you don´t have to plan ahead for the winter with meat etc... This "planning ahead" is one of the major problems african "culture" faces today, they ususally don´t plan ahead for anything.
While africa lacks foresight, they also have more dangerous/toxic animals than europe which could hinder their progress during the last 2000 years.
Finally they have lots of civil war going on and even smaller wars between tribes of a few hundred members going on, arguing and killing wether this cow belongs to whom.
In the end, location/climate, natural enemies and genetics created a huge difference between europe and africa over 2000-3000 years while while major wars created the difference between european countries.
