Programmers should have an understanding of linear algebra, data structures, searching/sorting, algorithms, etc.
You should probably take a few math classes, algo classes, and so on. This doesn't mean you need to take two years of Comp 101 and Black Women's Studies and Calc II other such bullshit that most CS degrees require
Talk to anyone in the industry and they'll tell you that all that matters is your work experience once you've gotten to a certain point. It's no different than doing poorly early on in school and then doing very well later on--high school programs and colleges only care about the most recent years. It's certainly harder to get into the game this way but lots of people do it and it's just fine.
If you can only see a few inches in front of your face, or if you are doing some kind of post-purchase rationalization bullshit, I can see why you think a CS degree is necessary--but many people understand that our university education system is becoming a losing proposition (hence coding bootcamps and other such things)

We just hired two guys in the last year that were college drop-outs, but worked their ass off. Our company is in a major university city. We don't hire them because they want ridiculous salaries and think they are owed everything because they went to a top school. They know as much as a kid off the street, but come with an attitude.
