Take me for example. I was born muslim here in malaysia, so i'm legally considered muslim by the government, and there's nothing i can do to change my identity as a muslim. So even though i don't believe in islam, legally in malaysia i'll always be a muslim. So how's my status, a non muslim by faith but muslim by my country's law, in regards to being able to enter the states?
now i don't have any plans of outing myself as an apostate, or going to the states any time zoon, but there are apostates here who are outed, either by themselves or by others, and they're desperate to get out. But still in their id they're muslim, since they can't change it because of the government not letting them do so. How then will the states, under trump, respond to people like these wanting to enter the us? Seems non humanitarian to refuse them tho.

I think it's fair to criticize Islam as a religion. I do it all the time. But to make it law that all Muslims should not be allowed to enter the United States is troublesome. It harkens back to the days of anti-Chinese immigration or how we treated the Japanese during World War 2.
In fairness to Trump, as I recall he did not directly propose identifying Muslims. However, when asked if he would go that far, he did not deny it. If he really does want to mark Muslims and practice surveillance of their mosques, I find it very troubling. Although I don't agree with Islamic ideology (or any religion for that matter), there are many good Muslims in my community. They deserve the same freedoms as any other people.

In my community there are people from Jordan, Iran, Saudi Arabia and other countries and to characterize all of them as potential terrorists is disingenuous. They're computer guys, restaurant owners, students, small business owners and other ordinary members of the community. The reason those people are doing well is because our policies changed toward them.
The way the Chinese were treated in this country was ugly, especially in my state. They were summarily lynched at times, beaten up, marginalized and detained for months at a time. They were criticized for their cultural habits of smoking opium and for many Chinese women being prostitutes, but these were direct effects of the actions of the West. The British and the US had introduced opium to China and made it an addiction. The Page Act limited the number of Chinese women who could come to the United States and thus created an environment where prostitution would thrive. Admittedly, Australia and Canada had similar anti-Chinese stances and Australia's immigration laws were even stricter.
I understand the argument for internment of Japanese during world war 2, but it was wrong to assume that all japanese americans were guilty of being enemies.
The downside to these policies is that it restricts the freedom of many legitimate American citizens. I believe that Ben Franklin said something along the lines of (paraphrasing) "he who would abandon freedom for security deserves neither."
