It's sometimes hard to parse between the religion and the local culture, but very often the worst elements of the local culture (e.g. honor killing) is supported by the religion's core values.
I started my career in international development as a liberal idealist. After having seen how these people behave and treat one another, it became quite clear to me that they did not share my beliefs or values. Social equality, human dignity, human rights, these are not things that concern the average Muslim in the Muslim world.
In the end, I became a cynic and gave up trying to help those who so often won't even help themselves. They are a lost cause. Their culture is simply too backwards for the West.

I've known countless ones. All of my neighbors right now are Sunni Muslims. They completely stick to themselves, some actually glare hatefuly at those outside their circles.
Persians in my experiences are really awesome though. And I've also known a lot of good Algerians and Syrians that are lovely - regardless of how scummy a lot of the ones flooding into Europe right now may be (and I hear the earlier immigrants themselves say the ones coming in now are the countries' worst).
In all honesty, I don't really hate them, and even kind of like a lot of aspects of their cultures and aesthetics, when they're doing their own thing in themselves. But I feel no need to deny though that it is a foundational part of their worldview to literally take everyone else over, and that they see us as evil infidels. It's not so much that we wouldn't attempt to let them be yet another smaller culture living in and among the west, it's that from THEIR end, they don't like US. It's just a fucking fact. And when they become a majority, and come into power, watch the fuck out, because there has never been a single case of a place run by their kind that wasn't a complete autocracy, or, in the absence of that, a violent hellhole. To be honest, I've literally spent more time overseas than at home in Canada, and so I'm still coming to terms with the Muslim community in Canada. I just got back five months ago, actually. From what I can see, they do not stand out, but they do harbor beliefs and values that are antithetical to Western beliefs and values and this prevents them from integrating socially.
They come here as economic migrants. They do not want to be Canadians first. They are Muslims first, and, as with any religious group, if they are given half the chance, they will impose their views on the rest of society once they have a large enough population - which they're working on.
Toronto, my home town, has changed noticeably in the 18 years I've been away. Crime seems much higher. People are much coarser and selfish in their interactions. In downtown, white people are much rarer. I was surprised to see a little white girl on the bus today, and then was surprised that I should be surprised. But that is where Canada is headed.
