Loads of people came to the US with German, Dutch or Scandinavian native languages. American English is full of Germanic stuff. In America and Germany you take a shower. In England you have a shower.
Also, in German you have to pronounce every letter of the word. In England, that was never such a big deal. So German-Americans learning English would see a word like "Norwich" and pronounce it "nor-wich", instead of the British "norrich". This also explains the American ditching of the U in colour and spelling "realize" instead of "realise".
