Redpill me on GMO. Why is it good/bad? Does it make you fat? More prone to diseases?
>>
>>68178992
All our crops have been manipulated to a large extent. GMO doesn't make it worse, it just makes the manipulation faster.

Source?

Food scientist here, also right winged. 80% is just having plants next to each other. Some is bad but it is less than 0.05%. Other gmo plants are to add herbicide resistance to them. What I've learned is the big anti gmo hippies want the label because of the natural argument. We can label almost anything as natural. If these labels are forced say bye to small farmers because they can't afford spreading out crops and can't afford greenhouses like big food companies. What will you choose in the market if you don't know much about gmos. A bag of carrots with a flashy green label or one without it.

This. But the problem with GMO seeds is that someone (a company or other entity) can own the patent or intellectual property of the seeds. If your neighbour is growing with seeds that someone else own's the IP of, and they blow into your field, they will chase you down for licensing fees.

This has literally never happened, the highly publicized cases of this ignore that the court found the amount of GM crop they had would be impossible to get through cross pollination.

Genetic modification isn't inherently good or bad, but like any other tool it can be used for good or bad reasons.

Also >redpill me on this
You fags are fucking retarded that term is so overused. You make it sound like you think there's some magical argument for every position that you just have to figure out and you'll never be wrong. Why can't you ask for information about them so you can educate yourself without sounding like a complete autist?

It has happened, but the story gets spun to make it seem like the farmer was innocent.
>Farm A uses Roundup-ready seed
>Pollination happens, Farm B gets pollinated by Farm A's GE crops
>Monsanto expects this to happen, usually don't give a shit
>Owner of farm B hits his field with roundup post-harvest and looks for what didn't die
>Collects seeds that have the Rounup-ready trait, stores them
>Farm B crosses and creates a stock of roundup-ready seed without paying Monsanto
>Monsanto sues farm B, court finds it to be theft in the same vein as piracy, gets busted

Sauce: USDA geneticist who worked at Monsanto as an intern while working on my PhD.

Some of you on here are taking pro-GMO stance it seems like by way of a neutralizing response of 'oh, it just means they are manipulating the genes faster than normal'.

Well, A) this isn't all that good because human biology doesn't adapt that quick. B) the main fact that gets glazed over is the fact that our entire food supply is gmo practicallly and why are we guinea pigs for it. Everything was organic 40-50 yrs ago.

More autism, more attention deficit, more diabetis (high fructose syrup perhaps?)

There is nothing intrinsically bad about genetically modified food. There simply isn't any evidence that GMOs make you fat or give you cancer or make pregnant mothers give birth to children with three heads. No studies have ever found genetically modified food to cause health defects in humans and the scientific consensus is that genetically modified food is safe.

The main reason for the negative public sentiment against GMOs isn't actually the science itself, but the occasionally questionable business practices of the companies that create it, like Monsanto.

The problem is not the manipulation itself mate, it is what it is used for.

The most popular GMO crops are round-up ready corn and soy, round up is a very carcinogenic herbicide that kills everything but the crops that have the imunity gene.

By using these crops and spraying with round up 2 times with 3-4 weeks apart from each aplication you are supposed to clean your entire field for a whole year.

The problem is that since the crops wont die no matter how much poison you throw at them the farmers feel like it is a great idea to spray it a lot more than needed to keep the field clean.

These poisons end up in your food and cause diseases such as cancer.

>Everything was organic 40-50 years ago

Define 'organic'. The produce grown fifty years ago might not have been created through gene-splicing, but it definitely wasn't organic or natural in the strictest sense of the words. Nitrogen fixing has been used commercially for over a hundred years, and crops like cabbage and bananas did not exist in any recognizable form until they were selectively bred to be more efficient for human purposes.

Does nobody read the fucking sticky?
>>
>>68182138
That's what I meant. There's no way in one crop you child get those results.
>>
>>68183225
Glycophosphate, the active ingredient in round up is 100% safe... You don't know what the hell you are talking about.
>>
>>68181623
It does, watch the documentary "Food Inc.". They interrogate you over every seed that blows over onto your farm. If you have 50 plants that came from pollination by GM seeds or seeds that blew over or were carried by birds, and you can't prove that seed No. 38 wasn't deliberately stolen, they will sue you for it and take your farm when you run out of money for legal fees.
