What exactly does a ban on Muslims mean?
A ban on anybody with a Muslim name, even if they never practice the religion? Do they have to be registered as a practicing Muslim? Is Muslim meant to be taken as some kind of ethnic umbrella?

It means a ban on anyone who is coming from an area with a high concentration of Muslims, in Muslim attire, or who self identifies as a Muslim.
This ban is wavered for people who have a legitimate reason to enter the country, barring tourism.
In the USA we already have no-fly lists, this would merely be an expansion of that based on national security.

Trump likes to make very broad statements. When he said that he wanted to put a "ban on Muslims" entering the US he meant Saudi Arabia and other such countries since to be a national of those countries by law means being Muslim

You obviously can't deport muslims who are already US citizens. That is not what Trump means by this. He also would not be able to ban an entire religion when it is easy enough to lie about.
It would end up being a ban on people from Muslim-majority countries immigrating to the US. This effectively bans the entire Arab world from entering the US unless they gain citizenship in Europe first before moving over.
