I think having a connection really helps.
My town has a partnership program with a Japanese town, so when I applied it was already considerably easy due to it having an established process.
Japan is really fun but it's different and can take getting used to. I actually found it easier to get along with my students if I played dumb as to how much I knew about Japanese pop culture and anime. They wanted to show me things and teach me as I teach them. So I did the same thing my second year there, and when I go back this year I'll do it again.
People are generally really polite and there are places you can go to meet people specifically interested in meeting foreigners. I have a friend through the program who works at the school I spent a lot of free time with, and they hooked me up with an apartment not too far away.
Overall a fun experience but more than just a fetish thing. Like this year my friend's little sister is going to be in my class and I'm not thinking about anything but how fun it will be to spend time with my students and teach.

I do have to share a story about my first year. I was teaching English language poetry and we got to romantic poetry and I set them to writing their own about whatever they wanted. You learn passable Japanese before you go, so you have the essentials down. I didn't really go to clubs like night clubs because the area I was in didn't have any. But I went to bars and that was fun. Telling people you're teaching English is a great ice breaker and women would ask you how to say certain words. Probably one of the biggest danger moments was when we took a trip to Ishiyama-dera. It's kind of a long story but I had a different student get me alone to talk about "class issues". MEXT. I applied for the embassy recommended one at first, and got to the final round. Apparently (according to a friend who got it before and talked to them about it) the biggest determining factor is Japanese level. They test your language skills on site, and if you score low they won't even interview you. There were 5 of us when I went for the interview and I thought I was boned because I was the only one who hadn't lived there before. I ended up scoring the second highest (thank you based DJT, lang-8 friends and manga) and only lost to the number one scorer by a couple points. They told me this because they expected my moon would suck since that's what I put on my resume, as I didn't want to brag. Turns out they wanted to give me the scholarship but couldn't because they only had one to give, and although they didn't say it I'm sure I lost it to the girl who outscored me. I did well, but there's no way a self taught kid with a couple years of study under his belt is going to beat a girl who's lived there and is studying medieval Japanese literature for her graduate research. Moral of the story is that if you want MEXT, hit the fucking books.
After that, I applied for the university recommended scholarship. I was one of the best students at my undergrad school, so getting a letter from the Dean wasn't too big a hurdle for me, and I currently work at MIT as a lab assistant so my experience and recommendations there went really far. Once I was evaluated on scientific skill and not pure language ability I was able to get through and secure the scholarship. As for applying to anything else, the school I applied to is really weird about how many scholarships you apply to and how the application cycle works, so I settled on this being the one scholarship I applied to.

I got into Japanese my Junior year then earnestly started wanting to go to Japan my senior year. I heard about MEXT last May (weeks before graduation). I still haven't applied because I think I don't have a chance. Asking around, it seemed like you had to have lived in Japan to get the scholarship. I couldn't study abroad due to the fine print of my full-ride. To try going to Japan, I applied for JET and am still waiting. My biggest regret is what I've (not) done since graduation. I'm a part-time plumber, and I haven't worked on my N3 much (at all) since graduation (Just quit Runescape, Fuck).
Any tips would be appreciated. Of course, I'm hitting Japanese hard again. Should I apply to lab tech jobs at prestigious universities? I really don't know what to do other than study Japanese and go to Japan. Thanks in advance.

I've never lived in Japan, but that's not a requirement. As for having a chance, as long as your resume isn't shit and your Japanese is good, you should be fine. I'm in an area where there's a lot of competition. Depending on which embassy is your home embassy, you might not have any strong competition to worry about. I applied to JET as well but didn't get in after college. They say they like people of diverse academic backgrounds, but I've never heard of a scientist who got in. I put that I planned on going to Japanese grad school after in my app, so I don't know if that was a red flag as they don't want people who treat it like a stepping stone. That sucked because the program is 5 years max and you HAVE to move on from it, and because I honestly would have put all my heart and soul into it and tried my best to teach. I really like kids and I have a lot of patience for them, and the idea of teaching young kids English sounded like a lot of fun while also being rewarding.
As for work, you're a biochem grad but haven't done any work in the field? Working in general is good, but you're not just applying for the scholarship, you need to get into grad school as well, so obviously science experience is better. I'd start emailing professors whose labs seem interesting to see if they'll take you into their lab as a grad student, because then you can write about that in your application and have a more structured plan laid out.

I was looking at medschool while I was an undergrad myself, but spending time working as an EMT put me off that. I didn't slip into Runescape, though, I just kind of kept on with the normal amount of anime and video games.
When you ask about getting into grad school, do you mean here or there? If you apply to MEXT through the embassy and want to go to grad school there, you need to apply for MEXT and then grad school after. I think this year's cycle needs to have apps in really soon though, so I don't know if you'll make it. What I did was email professors and explain I was a college graduate who wanted to do research in Japan and ask them if they'd be willing to take you. Form a repertoire with the ones that are responsive, and then tell them you're applying for MEXT. I also had the benefit of traveling to Japan on vacation during this process, and the teacher whose lab I'm joining now was kind enough to meet with me to discuss possible projects as well as let me tour the lab. That's really good to have on the application.
If you're talking about applying to masters programs here, I don't think it would hurt to get a masters here and then shoot for a PhD there if you're ok with that.

I'm in the process of completing an online TESOL certificate and already have a position lined up in Chengdu China at a highschool. The people I'm doing it through apparently set you up in a nice apartment (albeit small), reimburse your airfares and pay for your accommodation and expenses until you're on your feet. I'll get plenty of time off so I can come and go to visit family or travel around China, the money isn't great but I can negotiate for more and at the very least I will be able to save something as the cost of living is dirt cheap, and I have a plethora of chinese qt's who I've met on language exchange apps eager to show me around their city. A few have even confessed their affection for me and one wants to jump me the second I land at the airport.

It's not just Japanese ones, I'd reach out directly for professors to any lab I want to join as a student. You need to show initiative and willingness to take risks (to an extent) to stand out. As for applying to jobs, you said you were published in a journal before? Talk up your lab experience. Whatever skills they want, be sure to have them or at least be able to say "I'm familiar with the procedure and equipment, and am confident that I could learn it very quickly." You need to be confident to the point that it's bordering on bullshit, but isn't actually bullshit. Most scientists I know lack communication skills and can't sell themselves. It's pretty sad.

You need a bachelors, but not in English. The bachelor degree is just to get you a work visa. Any four (three for UK) degree will do.
Some places do require experience, but most of the English Eikawa/language school applications I see on Gaijin Pot and other places say no experience required, though it certainly helps.
