So it's dumb to suggest that it's a realistic threat. And also, religion means a lot to lots of good, honest, hard-working people. Sometimes they believe it all literally, sometimes it's just a cultural and community thing and they think about the stories as lessons, rather than literal fact. Either way, if you tell them that their religion is stupid, it is just going to make them believe it all the more - and dislike you immediately. That's how people are. If Trump courts the centrist vote and gets a respected Republican to say something like "we need to accept that the party has failed to deliver on promises and Trump is the guy to lead a more serious approach to American jobs and dealing with crime that benefits more than the special interests" then moderate Republicans and many Democrats (plenty of them can not stand Hillary) will come over. And lots of the Cruz/Beck fans will be with Trump because he still does OK with that group and they hate Hillary so much that most would get past any anti-Trump reservations they had, just like they did with Mormon Mitt.
If Trump goes the other way and offers a sop to Cruz/Beck fans, then all right-leaning Democrats and many moderate Republicans will think "this is exactly what we've been saying". Many will vote for Hillary because they will see it as her or something worse. And furthermore, many of the Cruz/Beck guys are untrustworthy schemers, even by political standards. If Trump gives them an inch by putting Cruz on the ticket, they'll try to take a mile by attempting to influence the campaign as much possible, further harming Trump in the eyes of the centrist voter.

The point of this is: America becoming a nation with zero tolerance on abortion and gays is not going to happen. Change can only happen so fast, especially in the countryside. If a guy is born gay in the country, he probably needs to move to a big city if he wants to live how he wants. It's maybe not ideal for him, but it's much better just a few decades ago and far, far better than most of the rest of the world.
My point is that there are more serious, real dangers to worry about, for example the influence of big money in national politics which has caused all kinds of problems such as the mass-outsourcing of American jobs, the unaccountability of the biggest banks and the price-gounging of the medical/insurance industry.
