I agree. The unfortunate reality, though, is that there exists an international cosmopolitan elite. An elite from Sydney and an elite from Mumbai will have more in common with each other than with their respective fellow citizens. That elite drives immigration laws, and they tend to be fairly loose, because they live in an isolated bubble with their own cosmopolitan culture and don't understand the rest of the world. That elite has to be placated.
