Depends on what you're having done at the dentist.
A simple cleaning and checkup can take less than an hour, serious work can take 2 or 3 hours in the chair and even anesthesia.
It also depends on your commute. If work 9-5, and are in the dentist from 10-12, plus an hour commute, it's not worth it to spend 2 hours driving just to work for 4 hours.

You can fix your own cavities. Teeth WILL remineralize as long as you have enough calcium in your diet and in your mouth, and the remineralization will close up cavities and has even been shown to grow back dentin.

2) use mouthwash that contains chlorhexidine. Available from your dentist by Rx for a lot of money or use the same thing sold for dogs/cats
3) get enough vitamins and minerals in your diet, and PLENTY of calcium and vitamin D
4) Chew tums if you want a mint.
