Communist intervention and the fact the KMT basically fucked it all up by actually fighting the Japanese while the communist kept saying they would while building forces behind them. Additonally, the KMT proceeded to take a toll on the locals in it's effort to fight of the Japanese, conscripting and pillaging villages in an attempt to protect villages further down the line (aka, using towns which the Japanese were going to take rather than). Both of these combined to give them little safe space and therefore requiring one of the largest and longest distance evacuations ever.

The agreement was that no one would start rapid expansion, but the Soviets, like they often did, broke that agreements and proceeded to push down and east as fast as they could. The end result of this was that the USA ended fighting against communist because they knew that not doing so would normally lead to non-communist defeat because the Soviets would support any and all communist actiosn, regardless of ideological purity (aka, mugabe being a communist/socialist in name only).

The problem is that being simpler to write does not mean it's simpler to learn the language. Memorizing Chinese characters is a very minor part of the learning process and radicals are useful for guessing pronounciation or meaning of the words. They're too useful to be discarded.
