Food back then was cooked by human beings using basic ingredients. Everything today is packaged and pre-made and full of sugar to ensure people like the taste and continually purchase it.
Regarding soda, it was consumed as an occasional snack, but not as the main beverage at every single meal, like today. People today are just drowning themselves in instant diabetus with soda.
If you don't know how to cook, and you just eat pre-packaged meals all day, every day, then you're going to get fat.
