MLK was a useless troublemaker and self-promoter. Mobs in the street didn't win the battle for civil rights. Responsible blacks winning cases before the Supreme Court did. Republicans constant push for Civil Rights did.
MLK staged the famous Birmingham protest after Bull Connor (D) had been defeated. There was no reason to have a showdown with an insane racist monster like Connor, except to gain attention for himself.
Connor was on the way out. Birmingham didn't just vote against Connor. To be extra sure they voted to eliminate the office he held too.
