It depends on how long the trial takes, which is typically three days to a week, but can be longer. Employees have to pay the employees' wage for the first three days of the trial, or $40 USD, whatever is lower. Jurors selected are not paid for their time/cost to travel or for lodging (unless the jury is sequestered from the public overnight, which isn't common).
An employer can opt to pay the juror their normal wage during a trial regardless of the number of days, but it isn't common.
It's also why you see a lot of educated people saying they don't trust cops or trust every word a cop says (prosecutor/defending attorney will ask for discard) or believe in jury nullification (prosecutor is sure to ask for dismissal) and then we end up with less intelligent people on Juries.

Jury duty is supposed to be a civic duty, not an income opportunity. Since the state pays so little they save money at trial, but you basically get fucked from an income perspective for having to have gone in.
I am a consultant and travel a lot. My company charges a lot of money for my time. I do a lot of critical work for my customers. Making the case that it caused my customer (an american company) hardship was not a suitable reason to get out of it. Polls taken before they start are almost always wrong for the same reason early polling in the GOP primaries that showed Trump didn't stand a chance were wrong: Most people are not actually paying attention. The majority of people, especially centrists, do not give one flying dickshit about the primaries and only show themselves when the general election starts. Throw these people into the polls and you suddenly get totally different results.
All Trump has to do is move slightly center and call Hillary out for her race/gender baiting tactics when she inevitably calls him raycis, something Bernie should have done but was too much of a cuck to do so. Once Trump does this he then has the upper hand due to being anti-establishment.
Cruz on the other hand will get destroyed by Hillary. People do not buy the trickle down economics anymore. People do not but the flat tax ideology except the extremely brainwashed tea party crowd. It would be stupidly easy for Hillary to paint Cruz as an anti-working class candidate and destroy him.
You have to actually look at each candidates "deck of cards" and policies to be able to tell who can beat who.
