TRUMP is seen as a racist because of his recklessly opportunistic attention whoring in the media.
It has to do with the grandstanding he did on behalf of the Obama-wasn't-born-in-America "birther" myth, a story that is clearly born of racist sentiments and only rode to prominence on a wave of racist paranoia that swept the country in the years since Obama was elected. Trump was more than happy to use that conspiracy theory (and I use the word "theory" loosely there) as a publicity stunt to boost his media profile.
Add to that his other signature policy of wanting to do a Schindlers' List-style roundup of all undocumented immigrants and you've got a pretty clear pattern.
But I'm actually not sure that Trump believes in any of the racially distasteful ideas he's known for. As a reality TV star and a gifted showman, he sees opportunities to make headlines and he takes them. But by always choosing to make news by using racist-flavored comments to stir up a racist-leaning demographic, he casts his lot with that crowd.

Normally I would never go overboard and throw it straight out, but I think he'll be difficult to keep in touch with. I would have hated for him to start getting into it and have nothing to follow up with and he had to leave so I felt I had to act fast, I did tell him to watch it in parts though because it's a lot to take in. I find if you don't go off at the deep end they're much more likely to listen and take things on board, I think because they're so used to having no one challenge them and everyone just agree with them they see it as a chance to show their intelligence and your ignorance, but when you actually show them evidence against what they're saying, it's like seeing a light in a cave and they just have to investigate because human curiosity. I've also found that if you challenge them by asking them, would they rather make up their own decision based off impartial evidence and simple maths or would they rather just repeat what someone else has told them to say, they're much more willing to try to prove you wrong and that's when you truly get them. No matter how brainwashed someone is, if they don't have anyone backing them up and it's just the two of you they simply can't refute anything you show them. I guess that's the major difference between /pol/ and reddit, we're more than comfortable arguing on our own because we aren't stumbling through specious reasoning, half truths and, most importantly, we have nothing to hide. Our research has been done and done again, there's relies purely on someone feeding them vetted information. Their business model is completely unsustainable for a very simple reason, pic related.
