They are pretty fun games. Made by a single guy called ZUN it's had installations since the 2000's.
A Shmup is a shoot 'em up, although it's normally called a Danmaku, which means bullet hell.
It's a pretty fun game in itself if you like the challenge, but you probably have to weeb it up to enjoy the characters and fandom.

Mix of being a decent series with a loose, fun concept, and being set against a backdrop that's an easy slate for fans to compose their own content against. The games are a fast-paced flyby past settings that are interesting enough to want to spend more time in (if you're a weeb), and the action moves so quickly that the characters come across as energetic. That leaves a lot of gaps begging to be filled, although the games are pretty balanced on their own.
Also it's all made by one guy.
