If that's true then I agree with him. I don't think the government should fund anything outside of pure necessities. All other things should be projects of the people, for the people to manage, and the for the people to conduct.
While I think space travel is important for humanity I don't think it's immediately important nor a necessity, especially not for the individual.
I would say space travel is more of a luxury; a leisure for the science community. It is not necessary for our government to run, it is not necessary for people to live, and it is not necessary for our immediate future.
