So Trump could have Mitt Romney as his VP running mate. Yet Ted Cruz could run his own VP campaign during the General election. If Cruz got more votes than Trump, but with Trump still winning his race. Then Cruz would be the vice president.

Imagine a military VP to put together a based specific plan to deal with isis in the campaign.

Do any states allow you to split your ticket like that? I've never seen it in any of the states I've lived in. Certainly it could happen when the Electoral College meets but in the general election, I think most, if not all, states put the president and vice president together into one choice.

Not all women are SJWs. Many of them are as sick of PC culture as men are and don't want to put their safety into the hands of another woman. This is especially true for married women. Depends on what kind of VP he wants. The invisible one who is just there to secure votes, or the one that is there to actually contribute to the administration.
In any way, someone with a background in politics should be a safe bet. Needs someone who understands how to work DC, and to make sure the establishment-voters are happy. Since they are currently backing Cruz, it should not be hard to find someone who fits the bill but still is an outsider.
Otherwise a minority or a woman to secure votes.
There is literally no point in going with another huge ego.
