I prefer weed to drinking simply because smoking weed to feel high is far less of a time commitment than drinking to get drunk. I can light up, get baked, and come back down to sober within an hour and a half, drinking takes me at least a half hour to get buzzed, and i need to sleep overnight before i feel like I'm not drunk anymore, and if i forget to keep hydrated before bed I'm dealing with a hangover on top of all that. Also storing a month's worth of weed is far easier than storing a month's worth of alcohol.
A lot of my life is centered around efficiency, it takes precedence over trying to remain non-degenerate. I find weed to be efficient. I find weed MAKES me efficient.

People want an escape, this can come in the form of drugs, alcohol, tv, food, vidya, books, etc. I feel that western culture just is more open with drugs (not on the government level but more on the average citizen's level). There are people that adhere to not using anything detrimental to their bodies, but typically these people are ostracized from normal culture because they are annoying as fuck to the average person. Example: vegans, vegetarians, straight edge, etc.
tl;dr: we do what we want, we ultimately all want to escape one way or another... drugs are just common in the west (especially in some areas).
Alcohol is fun, it looses you up socially. Weed is fun, it relaxes you. Coffee/caffein is great, it energizes you. Psychedelics are interesting, and lets you explore a completely new mental state outside of the norm.
If you aren't a complete retard, using these drugs recreationally is not only harmless, but even beneficial for your mental state.
