Trump doesn't want to ban ALL Muslims from entering the US. Even if he wanted, it wouldn't be possible.
What he wants is bar entry to the people (muslims) that come from war torn countries like Syria until the US finds a way to correctly screen them and perform valid background checks because there is a rational worry that you might be letting terrorists in your country.
So instead of saying "Let's block entry to Syrians, Iranians, Iraqis, Afghans, whatever other refugees" he just classified them all as "muslim", which is alright since he wants to fight islamism with this.
