These sites didn't hire any journalists and instead hired loud people with internet presence to make stories personal and ranty. The websites picked up the SJW movement from tumblr and their women's studies classes and also nepotism as none of these people had ever taken a class in ethics.
4chan's /v/ board, which was getting really upset with DRM, DLC, and games hyped by the media, given great review scores, which then turned out to be shit. Now /v/ was seeing the media attack developers for not enough women or what the women wore and completely ignoring other issues. Developers started trying to appease the new media (impossible) by.... Hiring a bunch of loud people to advise them on portrayal of women.
Any criticism by 4chan was now sexist. /v/'s anger was reaching a boiling point when the Five Guys Burgers and Fries dropped followed by 23 articles that called gamers dead, /v/ flipped their shit and never turned back. At this point in time, almost everyone was singing the SJW tune. People got even more upset when their voice was being stomped out by social platforms.
The bleeding heart mentality that special groups are not allowed to be criticized because they might be offended meant /v/ started to realize the importance of free speech, which was aligning with the anti-PC crowd. Add the media reaction to Donald trump and Europe's uncontrolled immigration. And we are now here.
