Actually, a good black friend of mine reads it because he has a master's in music for piano, but he also dresses nice, makes great grades and all the other blacks say "hurt he isn't black" because he talks and dresses normal.
Actually he dresses in very expensive sweater vests most of the time. He's the only black friend I could tolerate because he's pretty much white.

Music notation is a great tool, and essential for proper composition, but honestly, if you can get by with just your ear, you're probably a better musician as a whole.
It's seriously much fucking easier to learn to read notation than it is to just internalize pitches, unless you're born with perfect pitch.

My Father, a black man, was a gospel and jazz musician. He was quite proficient both reading and writing musical notation. He also wrote in hexadecimal notation and wrote low-level MIDI subroutines in machine language. He owned a Yamaha CX5M personal computer and its companion keyboard controller.
His constant lament was that there wast adequate musical notation software on the market that could OCR handwritten music sheets and also translate to MIDI.
...And yes, he was a loving husband and father and very much involved with his wife and kids.

Western music notation is pretty simple as it's based on our innate understanding of music.
But it's developed so much getting in can be quite tough. Once you're past the basics, everything just kinda fits together.

I was classically trained (Piano, Brass) as a kid/teenager/young adult, so yeah.
My father was also a classically trained pianist, and he met my mother taking such a course.
Ironically though I'm a third generation engineer, since logic and mathematics also runs in the family.
