I was hoping for a Sanders-Webb tickets, based purely on the idea of Sanders acting like a standard politician and go for someone opposite of them within the party spectrum and Webb being anti-establishment.

I would have voted for that because Sanders would croak in office (dude would be 75 when he's sworn in - look how much Obama aged just after his first year!) and Webb would jump to commander in chief.
I was a big supporter of him even before /pol/ found out who he was but it really made no sense that he dropped out after the first debate. There was plenty of free tv advertising to be had which would have helped him build a bigger national profile. An independent presidential bid is a long shot to begin with but it's beyond impossible if you have zero name recognition.
