I know people who are good at small talk. However, there's a difference between someone who's a natural extrovert, and the shit that Americans call small talk.
An extrovert can talk about almost any topic with anyone, and make it interesting. I have friends and family who's like this. My father was a fucking master at it, and could befriend anyone. As a kid, I couldn't walk through town with him without being stopped several times, because he'd meet someone who knew him.
American small talk is just horrid, though. It's that glazed look in the eyes, the fake smile and the canned phrases that makes it so incredibly superficial. It's like you're talking to a clerk, who's paid to be polite. There's just no life behind that plastic veneer and those dead eyes.
