English posters, how did you react to learning about The American Revolution in school? At what age does you country deem it appropriate to teach your children about the time it lost to America and how America would eventually become the #1 super power in the world?
>>
>>67951495
If it weren't for Yankees chimping out, we could have had based Pitt the Younger for a prime minister.
>>
>>67951495
At least they teach world history in elementary school, the American public education system is beyond repair.
>>
The American what?
>>
>>67951495
we never learnt about it
>>
didnt learn about that at all, all i learnt about was ww1 and ww2.

also you arent that great anymore, neither are we, you're just as fucked as we are.
>>
>>67951495

wait, you guys aren't part of the commonwealth?
>>
>>67951495
It never came up. I heard about it in passing, in media, and from reading about it. But for that period of our history we were busy with more important things, so it's not really part of our curriculum.
>>
>inafter irrelevant countries
>>
>>67951495
alright, america, sit the fuck down
we already have quite enough of our own history
>>
>>67954059

Why would we learn about something that was incredibly small to us? Our history stretches back 2k+ years

We don't learn about it.

It is seen as that irrelevant that we don't even give a fuck.

Vietnam? We learn about that, but not the American revolution.

I chose modern history

Honestly losing the war was good for the fledgeling empire. We learned the lessons necessary to dominate India & co with.

We learned that the Americans were separatists, who pretended they wanted representation as an excuse to leave, but when it was offered to them, they turned it down. Then Britain said fuck it, had a bit of a fight, but had more valuable places to defend and let them secede.

They don't react. History is a frightening thing for the average Brit, so every failure or bit of incompetence is glossed over. I don't think it's taught mate. I was in school during the 80s and we weren't taught about it.
My daughter is studying history at college and she tells me that it's all about ww1 and Vikings.

Anything I know about US history is self taught. Founding fathers, declaration of independence, spilling British tea in Boston, being our mates (sort of), American civil war.
And loads of other fascinating topics.
My interest is more in British Iron Age and 'pre history'. There are shitloads of weird stone carvings all over and nobody knows what they mean. The pic is cup and ring marks. Also standing stones. What are they about?

>they're saying they made more vassalbux off India than America, besides, when the french rolled in, they deemed us too expensive to keep. Still we did btfo of them. Hoo rah.

Yes, because they had India up farther into the age of industry when they could really put the colonies to serious economic output.

If they had the US still, the lower cost of travel and transportation of resources and the viable long-term livability would've provided not only natural resource supplementary to the UK itself, but it would've provided millions in terms economic worth for real estate.

Rhodesia was some of, if not outright, the most productive farmland in Africa, yes. To compare the amount of resources in Rhodesia to the modern borders of the United States though? It's not even a fucking contest, in fact it's pretty absurd to claim that the two are even remotely comparable.

All we learned about for our GCSE's (the exams you take at 16, which was leaving age when I was at school) was the US Civil Rights Movement and the Nazis in the Second World War. That was the entirety of our historical knowledge.
No Anglo-Saxon, English or British Monarchs; no Civil War; no Angevin Empire; no Glorious Revolution; no Dissolution of the Monasteries... nothing but "da Nazis wuz evil and blacks wuz slaves". All valid truths worth learning, but there are other things in the world apart from anti-Fascism and anti-Racism

i never knew they didn't teach brits about the war. but it's not surprising. US history never talks about the bad parts.
>>
>>67956508

Americans are quite autistic, so they can't imagine anyone having a different experience to their own. Since their national history begins in 1776 and they're all brainwashed about it at school, they assume that everyone else has learnt about it too, yet most people have national histories spanning thousands of years and couldn't care less about such an objectively insignificant event, and almost certainly didn't look at it in school.
>>
Events more Important to our history I remember learning about, many others but can't think off the top of my head. There's so much that lots of stuff that you should really know as an adult gets brushed over

Roman Britain

Bit about 7 kingdoms/Danelaw

1066

100 years war

War of the roses

English civil war

Henry the 8th declaring independence from the Roman Catholic Church

Surprisingly little about the British empire in general, when talking about the Victorians weirdly it's mostly domestic stuff even though that's arguably the most important bit of our history

World war 1

World war 2

Irish independence and the troubles
>>
>>67956380
That's the long and short of it on the military side. Also Britain's best generals were in other parts of the world so we got off a little lucky fighting Cornwallis.

Worth examining the causes of it it from a political and social side. Mostly Americans were pissed that they weren't being represented in Parliament, were being taxed, had soldiers quartered in their homes against their consent, etc.

Lot of deprivation of rights before the war started.

The United States, objectively, OBJECTIVELY, has more agriculture, mineral, geographic, and demographic resources at its disposal. I don't even understand how you could possibly argue this. Even if the nation of Zimbabwe were to become a completely developed first world nation, they wouldn't have the land or manpower to compete with the US 1 to 1 on a global scale.

They'd probably stop a lot of Africans from starving though, so good on them. I'm not trying to argue from a point of blind nationalism here, the nation is simply not large enough to be of the same value as the US at the same level of development.

Pretty much this

Look at this way, in terms of teaching history of a country with 1500+ years of actual stuff to teach you have to split it somehow.

Pretty much it's just spilt into, MAJOR shit that happened in the world in the last 100 years, so WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Cold War, and the background/context of those periods, plus critical events in those, Cuban Missile Crisis etc

Pre those periods UK history tends to be spilt into much bigger chunks of learning. Vikings/Norman stuff, Industrial revolution, Henry VIII etc. This tends to be more basic, "how did those people live" type of early teaching stuff. I do remember some lessons about the Boston tea party and the early colonisation of America but really any depth learning about the US revolutionary war wasn't there. Why? Primarily this is a critical event in your nations history, not ours.
