It has a potential to backfire though. Like it or not, Cruz is identified as a Republican. Cruz supporting a "Kill the Gays" pastor would also be seen as Republicans endorsing the same views, even though it isn't true for some of them, especially Trump (he doesn't care). So this could scare some of the moderate right and a significant number of independents and undecided.
