to be honest though, I think most would feel a connection as the landscape of south and west wales, the most populous parts, is similar to cornwall, the beaches, fishing villages and british coastal culture is shared pretty strongly there
of course that also goes for other parts of the UK, there's a lot of shared culture there

most of wales is rural britain, which is to say nice countryside, lots of history

That's true both linguistically and to some extent genetically, Welsh and Cornish are both direct descendants of Brittonic, the language spoken by the pre-Romanised Britons.
Lots of English people actually have a fair amount of "British" DNA, especially around the south-west, Liverpool and the borders area but the rest is mostly Anglo-Saxon invader in blood, especially East Anglia.

Nah, the British flag is good and no thoughtful Welsh person should be offended by our representation through it. When Wales was annexed it was under the Tudor line, indeed Welsh-English relations grew strongly before that under the Welsh and first Tudor king Henry VII. Naturally at that time there was not a lot of protest from Wales about being represented under a new entity. Wales and England did not exist as we know them today, they were very fractured places and changing constantly. With hindsight there were of course times where Wales was much more forced upon by England, but Wales is represented under the union flag all the same and for over 300 years we've worked together underneath it.
