I don't know about realigning. Trump is tapping into an unusual amount of discontent. If social media is indeed revealing discontent that always existed, and will continue to exist, but was previously impotent, then it might be a year of realignment. If this were the case, then the democrats would just respond by changing their message enough to try to get 51% of the electoral college again.

Demographics. New Mexico hasn't been popular for whites to move to seeking jobs or to retire, so it has a larger proportion of hispanics. Colorado has a lot of people move to it from out of state, but they're mostly from California. Colorado used to be red, then purple, and now it's pretty much turned solid blue from the Californian migration. Arizona is also a popular place to move to for retirement and job seeking, but for reasons I'm not certain of it has attracted a lot of conservatives.
