Our military is so powerful that Europe isn't spending enough of Defense because they don't have to.
We have strategic military bases and listening posts all over the world.
And we're leaders in most fields of technology.
Frankly Europeans aren't our equals anyway. The only reason why we have good relations is mere diplomacy and to keep our foothold in Europe in case we have to fight Russia

the only reason people don't consider the E.U a single country is because it's a lot more new than the US. Before the American civil war, the US wasn't considered a single country, it was considered a union of countries (see: states).
The politics of the modern EU bear heavy resemblance to how the pre-civil war Union worked.
I guarentee you within 100 years the EU will function as a fully fledged federal entity and will have more authority than the legislature of member states, just as it happened here 150 years ago.
