Way I see it, nationalism is an expression of an innate basic instinct. Our political structures, if they aim for durability, should aim to work WITH our human nature, not against it. As such, nationalist ideas are healthy. If correctly interpreted, nationalism is actually AGAINST imperialism on a foreign policy level, and against divisive class warfare domestically.

Germany was ruined by nationalism AND allied countries. They wanted to destabilize it every time it became stronger in economy. WW1 was started to clear europe of german egemony. WW2 was a backlash of WW1, germany was divided to prevent another war. With germany reunited in the past 20 years the main issue was about an egemonic germany in the EU.
