It means that because Mao Zedong, Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin didn't follow his brand of communism, they're not according to him true communists.
What he does not seem to realize is that every single time a country tries to walk the path to communism, they instead end up as an autocratic totalitarian shithole.
They think it's because "communism was never truly tried." but they don't understand that the road itself to communism makes communism fail.
Ultimately, if you want to live in a commune, you can make the arrangements and live in one. You even get to enjoy the benefits of modern world because you can order stuff online.
You can live in your own communist utopia that extends to that stretch of land the commune has.
However, they do not do this because they ultimately just believe that as long as we vanguish the great devil that is capitalism, then the miasma of oppression will suddenly vanish, everyone will link hands and sing Kumbaya as the wells of prosperity spring forth from the ground showering everyone with love, tolerance and hot topic gift certificates.
