Hitler could do that because of the massive workforce required to keep his war industry up. Soviets could do that because they lowered the life quality of their citizens and their ethics until it fit.
Todays socialism is literally about free stuff and the entitlement to free stuff, regardless of who you are and where you come from. It's the idea, that you owe someone money because you have money.

National socialism is the inevitable result of any socialism.
Socialism claims to want to make people equal, but can only be implemented where there is inequality. If everyone is equal, there is no ability or need to redistribute in the first place.
So socialism requires class divisions to operate. A class to redistribute from, and a class to redistribute to.
The larger the parasite class is compared to the host class they are mooching from, the less there is to go around, so that class will, by necessity, try to prevent those who are even more poor and destitute from joining their ranks.
The moochers may hate the rich, but they depend on them for their gibs. However, they really REALLY hate those who are even poorer than them, who by their own ideology have a stronger claim to the expropriated wealth of the rich. So, more than robbing the rich, the base requirement for a socialist society not to collapse in on itself is to keep the poor from other societies from coming in and diluting how much wealth there is to 'share'.
All socialism is national socialism, otherwise it fails even sooner.

the big government idea is not a part of original Leftism which stressed freedom and equality. Communism as originally envisioned is stateless, yet equal and free. Modern Leftist governments are trending authoritarian, but still want equality for all, and ostensibly freedom(ie oppressed classes are having their freedom infringed upon).
Right-wing governments can be small(libertarian capitalist type ideas) or large(Fascist spectrum), the consistent part is the emphasis of hierarchy and 'holism' or the whole coming together as a kind of organism, as being desirable.
These are the two axes that make sense, modern Left/Right dichotomies are often incoherent jumbles of these ideas. Big government can be a part of Left or Right political systems, as can be small or no government.
