A lot of these memes aren't even that old. I remember the post that got me hooked on 4chan back in late 04 was a George Zimmer copypasta (this was before copypasta was even a term).
I feel like 03-05 4chan is mostly dead and gone by now. In hindsight many of those memes weren't too funny, but I am kind of surprised Cockmongler fizzled out. I feel like that could still get some laughs.

As somebody with an anthropology degree, I don't really know what makes memes come and go. Its some weird cultural thing locked in time that doesn't seem to replicate properly once moved out of its point in time.
My best guess is that there seems to be a certain threshold of people actively participating in the usage of a meme to make it relevant based to the size of the population. Would be something to do in anthropology but the LOL left hijacked to hell and back.
