Fucking boomers...
Here's some Old Economy Steve for ya.
>>67846481
Same here dude. Only way to get jobs online is to apply to literally EVERYTHING you're qualified for.
Walk-ins are daunting but if you just push through that anxeity and do it, you have a way better chance.
Also quantity over quality, apply to everything dawg
>>67846481
My parents didn't help me buy a car during high school and then they asked my why I wasn't going to college or working.
Who /overqualification trap/ here?
>>67847537
My parents didn't allow me to learn to drive because it took time away from studying.
>>67846481
No one wants some random walking into their workplace to leave their resume. It also takes away the point of the resume, which is to leave a first impression. It becomes you leaving the first impression. And if you're some NEET neckbeard, it's probably a bad first impression.
Buy a nice bit of Linen paper and Envelopes, make a very nice Resume, and mail your resumes out snail mail. It makes the same impact as walking in without any of the awkwardness.
>>67847757
It really fucked me over though because I enrolled in community college and wasn't able to go. Never wen't back.
>>67846481
The problem with applying online is filter software that reject your resume before a human ever sees it. Call up a staffing company and they can help you put your resume together to get past those filters.
>>67846481
are you following up with phone calls the next day? Then again the next week?
Because you should be.
>>67846481
>parents tells me to walk in apply with resume on hand and give firm handshakes
Yeah, it doesn't work that way anymore.
>apply on the internet
And it has NEVER worked this way, in the vast majority of cases.
Here's how it actually works now:
>Pick a good degree
>Do well in your first few years at school
>Secure a paid internship for experience
>Network at aforementioned internship(s), as well as with your classmates and extended family.
Today, jobs are gotten through connections. I haven't even interviewed for my last 2 jobs, and I'm only like 4-5 years into my industry.
>>67847949
Ride the bus, nigger... hell, even niggers ride the bus and walk.
Even I do it. Walk like 4 miles a day and eat a family size bag of lays.
Walking in is a good way to see if you'd like it there, but only if it's open to the public.
I've had 8 fulltime and 4 part time jobs.
Bring a resume, but meet your future boss before you get filtered out by the HR idiots.
>>67848362
and if you don't happen to land a good internship, or your internship doesn't offer you a job, you fall COMPLETELY through the net, and will never recover
we spend 4 years after highschool doing completely WORTHLESS shit, to prove a point. and then, none of it even matters. so why even go to college? they should just offer us unpaid internships during high school, and save us the trouble.
>>67846481
Here's advice for you: git gud.
>>67848672
I don't disagree with you on any point.
I don't know if it's everywhere in Canada, but I actually did do an unpaid internship in high school (half days for one semester of my senior year). It was at a computer repair shop, which was great for people skills and obviously the technical side (I now work in IT). I still list it on my resume!

>>67846481

>>67849335
GO make friends.
>>67849409
and this is where the argument breaks down
it's not about how good of an engineer you are. it's whether you have friends with jobs or not.
so why even bother with school?
this topic is a non-starter. people with jobs feel superior and entitled, no matter how they got them.
this is why the economy will shut down eventually. hope you enjoy getting killed by niggers and communists, because this is what happens when you refuse to empower the white working class.
>>67849641
Exactly I'm about 10x the engineer my sister is but since she's a woman she's entitled to a 100k a year job whil I'm working for free at GAPower. I made way better grades than her in school and she regularly calls me for technical advice.
>>67849335
>they work in extremely powerful positions at various corporations
You really have no idea how the world works. Your uncle might know 100+ people you've never met - by mentioning to him that you're looking for work, he may have overheard an opportunity, or at the very least now he's on even a casual lookout. You've just extended your network.
Maybe your cousin is a carpenter (as an example). He may be able to get you a $13/hr job moving shit around, enough to pay the bills some bills in the meantime. Maybe the company you now work for does residential stuff, and you get to talking with a homeowner about how your real passion is X. Well, just so happens he works for a company that does X! Maybe you get an interview, or at least you've expanded your network again.
Sorry, but you have to be social and make your opportunities if you want to make it.
I used to work at Taco bell, here is how the managers hired people
>Stranger walks in
>Kid seems nervous, nothing stands out
>Single, lives with parents
>w/e they don't hire him
>Fucking skinny ass white kid with ear gauges comes through
>Was lobby at the time eaves drop
>"I just need work for my kid and her mom ya know?"
>more social, but comes off sleazy to me.
>He gets hired
>He constantly bugs me, smokes weed outside at night, could not do drive thru worth shit.
>Ends up in jail for other drug shit week 3
People hire who they like and who they know.
Pic related, still had it on my phone. Average week of complaints/compliments
If you want to fuck some one over at Taco Bell, those surveys actually hurt a lot.

there are various. in korea samsung doesn't even hire people who went to college, they just use iq tests and hire the brightest.
in america, iq tests are illegal, so for a long time they used schools and looked for your scores on, say, mba exit tests.
but those then also got watered down. they don't indicate how well a person can learn (which is what they want.) so the only proxies they can rely on are previous work experience, and social networks that risk reputation.
if you deny that reality has a structure, you're just being an idiot. people look for the best information they can find. when information is unavailable or outlawed, because of regulation, they find workarounds.

>>67851617
Yeah, that was after high school.
Let me give all of you some solid advice.
Take a look at business owners. They are constantly meeting new clients, drumming up business, spreading a good reputation. It's not how you might imagine, "you own a business do you don't technically have a job."
A business owner's job is constantly, almost daily, applying for new jobs and getting them. How do they do it? They send emails, they make phonecalls. They discuss a client's needs. They go and meet them in person, find out what they can do for that business, and find a way to provide it at a reasonable cost.
Getting a job is no different. It's not going there with your hat in hand, asking "can you please find something for me to do and pay me for it?" It's "I heard your business does X, I have Y skills and I feel I would be suited for Z task. I [saw your job offer] / [heard about your business] and would like to contribute. Would you like a copy of my [resume] / [services and quotes]?"
Business owners' lives are one long continuous stream of job applications and salary negotiations. Approach it the same way.
I have never had an interview in which I did not get the job, and now I'm running my own consulting business.
>>67851488
If you are desperate to find a job to pay bills as an in-between for a real opportunity. Employers do not always hire advanced candidates for lower level positions for various reasons.
>>67851511
as the above poster mentioned, many bosses PREFER dumb people because it guarantees that their position in the office remains secure
then, you end up with dumb people in positions of influence and with experience, looking down on smart people, and then businesses collapse and you get a recession.
again, this happened in china. old news, you would think, that if smart people held influence, these mistakes wouldn't be repeated. but it's repeating, so that says something about the people who have jobs, doesn't it?

the legal structure of meritocracy has broken down, having caved to political correctness. because of this, meritocracy cannot function, and the allocation of jobs doesn't depend on reliable market information, but on personal contacts.
that has nothing to do with "being weird." again, during the communist revolution, when commies gave all the jobs to their family, it ended up being that the most vile and violent of the communists ended up being the ones wit hthe most power, and therefore, the best jobs.
and as a consequence, china was fucked up for 80 years straight.

Bouncing from Job to job - red fucking flag. If we hire you you're only going to start being profitable when you're trained, which depending on job takes 3-6 months.
Not catering your resume to the position - Work experience or just experience in general can be drawn from every day life. You can really stretch those simple experiences into a quality that we are searching for and spelled out in the job description.
Grammar, shit compositions - that's obvious
BTW I deal with a lot of engineers, so I'm sure a lot of you guys can relate

since you seem to be particularly stupid, let me put it another way
you are an employer. you are looking to hire someone, but you cannot use IQ, criminal history, or race as a determinant, and legal requirements also force you to hire someone with 2 years requisite experience in the field to avoid lawsuits (a lawsuit would also bankrupt your business/get you fired.)
if you make a poor decision, you will lose your job. if you hire someone TOO good, you will be replaced. what do you do, and how do you hire? what kind of candidate do you hire?
please describe the information to me in detail. because this is what businesses and managers deal with, essentially. by the very structure of it, the best people are more or less denied a spot.

Different cities have different standards and methods on hiring. Back in the Woodlands/Houston all I had to do was post my resume and there'd be staffing agencies looking for jobs for me. (Ended up getting a job like this. The other times I had interviews and they liked what they saw.)
Meanwhile back in my home town Brownsville almost no one replies back towards applications or there's a "You passed our 2 hour long pre-assessment. We'll contact you if for an interview if HR deems you worthy" and you get no e-mail or phone call.
It's fairly easy to get a job in cities as long as you make yourself presentable but in other cities you never will because you won't have 10 years of experience in unpacking boxes like Juan across the boarder does.

If you're a NEET, you should probably take baby steps and maybe join a church or community of some sort to practice first. Volunteer work is good too, anything that will let you interact with other people.
It's not hard, just try to make others happy. Eventually you should build up enough self-confidence to apply for a degree/certificate or a entry level job.
The answer to how do I get an entry level job after years of NEETdom is that you basically don't.

>personality...has nothing to do with qualifications
A candidate's personality, attitude, whether they work well with others, etc. is definitely a qualification and a big determining factor in whether they will make an effective employee. There's a reason they call them social skills - they are skills that can be learned, like other "soft" skills.

In certain states, companies are required to provide benefits to workers if they put in more than a certain number of hours. As a cost cutting measure, companies make nearly everyone part time as a way to skimp on paying out. It isn't like people are going to unionize or anything and collectively bargain with the employer.

Please go away until HR decides to begin the interviewing process" People are busy, especially in labs, and don't want to be bothered by someone who hasn't even been interviewed. My supervisors have told me themselves that they look at people who do that funny. It's just out of place now. If you want to stand out, sure, but it'll probably backfire. You have a better shot at making your resume stand out and calling it a day.

employers are claiming that there's a skills shortage. there's not a shortage of paper qualifications coming from university. that means they're REJECTING the qualifications.
so they turn to personal networks. oh, hey, there IS a hard limit to personal networks.
I'm not sure how you can honestly claim that
1. the labor shortage is real
2. qualifications aren't institutionally worthless
3. your lack of qualifications is what denies you the job
4. but the surplus of qualified individuals, with valuable institutional certifications, can somehow coexist with the labor shortage

This is a major, major P I T A of job-hunting (as if the process isn't soul-killing enough as it is). It's irrelevant unless you're in positions where you interact with customers/clients. If you're going to be an engineering or a Technician and everyone speaks fluent Spanish then your ability to speak it means nothing. If you become a manager and you deal with Spanish clientele then it is important but for the majority of Americans it means absolutely nothing.
The more north I moved the less and less I heard Spanish until I stopped hearing it entirely. Jobs didn't even say "Bilingual desired/required" anymore to boot.
It's only an issue in cities with high Mexicunts or jobs that have a large clientele in Spanish speaking countries.
I will concede that it's useful to know just in case.

the lab manager was an idiot, but she needed to hire someone on her career track to have legal access to the database. but she didn't want anyone encroaching on her position, because she would have been replaced quickly.
so instead she hired me for a junior position on a different track "legally" through an internal memo, then had me doing work of an entirely different sort, and fudging all the numbers.
government work, at your service.
I didn't intentionally fuck up, that was my fault, but I did it with her reg info, so she HAD to take the blame, or admit to hiring me illegally. kek.
again, government "work."
I've heard it's not too different in teh private sector. so whenever someone jacks themselves off about how "hard working" the are, or how everyone else si scum under their boot, I tend to think of someone like my old boss.
people always protect their own internal positions/power in the absence of comprehensive performance reviews/solid hiring metrics.

No joke. I applied for so many places in the UK and got like 2 responses.
I sat in my friends white van whilst he was on work (with approval from his boss), and mentioned I was searching.
His boss gave me a position on the spot because my friend vouched.
Same happened when I moved here; I got a job simply because an employee I met at a party recommended me after I mentioned I was looking.
It sucks that its basically preferential treatment:the business for almost every industry.
>>67854844
First of all you're fucking retarded.
>I just got a diploma I'm the most qualified person for the jobs
No idiot, a diploma doesn't get you to be the most qualified for the job. Guess what? Only 20% of Americans have a college degree. Why would anyone hire a kid out of college with little work experience over someone who has 10+ years of it with no college degree?
Labor shortage is real. Industries vary idiots. Some industries have hard times finding people with the skills to do the jobs. How is that hard to grasp?
Qualifications are what guarantees me as an employer that you'll be easy to train, and that i will get a return on my investment (PAYING YOU) after I train you. If you don't have those, then my investment will be longer, and risky. Simple as fuck.
Once again, there are thousands of jobs and millions of industries. You seem to not understand that.
>>67848362

Yes, obviously. Those who are under-qualified become immediately apparent from reading their resume, those who appear to be qualified but actually aren't are weeded out during the interview process, and then perhaps I'll call a couple back for a second interview before making a final decision.
I thought this process was common knowledge, but apparently not.

Ford, who was a Nazi. So you should probably idolize the function
Im 30 now and I have been struggling for the last 12 years to land my 'dream job'. I never had a problem getting a regular, bottom of the barrel entry level job. I am going to give you some insight and advice to get your parents off your back and get you working.
Firstly, dont get mad at your parents. Parents want to see three things from their offspring. 1) that they see to becoming educated in university or college. 2) that they get a job. At first it doesnt have to be a good job. They just want you to get out into the world, take on responsibility and gain experience and a lay cheque. 3) make gains. they dont want you to stagnate into a dead end lowly job, or even worse. Being unemployed.
Dont be picky. You have to realize that when you are 17-23 any work is good work, because this is where you make your bones. The guys and girls that take a job at a grocery store stocking shelves or working a till and dont work hard are the ones that end up staying, or bouncing around from shit job to shit job. Treat your first couple jobs seriously, and work hard. Put in 40+ hour weeks and take other peoples shifts when theyre sick. Always show up 10 minutes early. You dont want to be the guy that shows up 30-20 minites early because your coworkers will know you are a backstabbing brown noser, and dont show up late because you will get a reputation for being tardy. 10 minutes early is the sweet spot. Always do something extra, by going above and beyond your duties. This could be done by really being friendly and courteous with a customer by helping them out. If you do this often, one day one of them will put in a good word to your supervisor or even better your manager. This is the way you build a reputation as the total worker. Your on time. You work alot. You are willing to sacrifice your time to cover for someone that is sick for the good of the company and you go above and beyond to make a customer satisfied.
>>67855675

>>67855659
maybe I'm arguing with someone else? it's hard to keep track.
some people are saying the labor shortage isn't real, and then blaming individuals for the economy. which is dumb.
another couple of individuals are saying that their hiring mechanisms are competent, which again, they aren't.
of course industries vary. the reality of the situation is, though, we've been in recession the last 7 years. there's a net labor shortage of about 7 years of population growth, and a situation where the market can't price labor.
employers are doing their best to hire the best candidate. but it's difficult, and a flawed process because of legal barriers. that's my argument.

>it's immediately apparent from reading a resume of a page or two in length, with a paragraph, who has actually performed the job?
Yes, I'm looking for a certain skill set, a certain amount of experience in individual skills, and so on. If what is written on their resume does not reflect that but they actually, secretly do have those skills, that's a shame but it's not my problem (may they should consider better tailoring their resume to this specific job posting). If what appears on their resume does not meet the requirements I outlined in the job posting (or somewhere close to them), then their resume is discarded. If they do meet the requirements, they will be interviewed and the process I outlined earlier moves forward.
Again, thought this was common knowledge. It's always been my experience that this system works well.

Most 'normal' people would think "why the fuck would i want to do all that for a shitty job". Youre doing it for 1) quick advancement which means more pay and 2) you really want your references from this job to pull through for you when you apply for a bigger and better job. That last few sentences is what they are going to say to your potential new employer. Remember that managers and supervisors only remember the good workers. People quit or get fired all the time at these lowly jobs and the ones that do the bare minimum are easily forgotten. If Tom worked at the grocer for three years pulling 32 hour weeks, never taking other peoples shifts and doing the bare minimum this is what his reference will sound like "so tell me about Tom. Gow did you like him". "Yea Toms a good guy...good worker. He worked here for awhile. Nice guy..." and here is someones reference thathas the ethics I had suggested. "So tell me about Steve" "Where to start? Heis my best worker and I wish he wasnt going. Always on time. Goes above and beyond to help customers. Very helpful team player. Always positive. Rarely, if ever complains...hes basically the perfect worker and I am sad to see him go".
There is a HUGE difference. These are references young people need yet so few get.
Shitty workers have a tendency to make up fake jobs and get phony references. Thwy think theyre being smart, but you cant fool a manager thats been doing his job for years, hiring people. He knows whats real, what sounds promising and what sounds like total farce. Besides...even if someone got hired by a phony reference, his true work ethic will prove unsatisfactory to everything his reference said he was. Most good jobs have a trial period. Youll get let go if you are a disappointment.
Honest hard work is the only way to advance.

To be honest with you, if your degree really is completely irrelevant to what you're doing, I would not even include it on a resume. Even if you spent 3 years on it. Accept that it was a waste of time and focus on things that actually make you valuable for the position you're after. Telling me you got your bachelors in gender studies with a minor in modern feminism, while you're applying for a 9-5 administrative desk job is just ignorant.
>>67856997

>>67856149
Actually even an "irrelevant" degree will sometimes get you past screeners where all they want is a Bachelors in something.
Finishing college show you can finish what you start, because MANY do not. You might work at something having nothing in common with your degree, but having it is likely to at least get you past the first cut of resume screening.
Plus, now there's this big push for tech people to have Humanities enhancement, like those (to me, bogus) "Masters in Liberal Studies". Sometimes code geeks are too socially inept to even say hello to the client.
>>67857096
Leave the gap in there, and get yourself an interview. It's free conversational bait to explain what you spent your time doing, and you get to explain why you didn't include it. That'll give you more time to actually communicate and let the employer get to know you, as well as demonstrate sound judgement, levelheadedness and an understanding of what's important and what's not.
I can't speak for everyone else but in my experience getting an interview has never been a problem, and I've never once not got a job I interviewed for.

Mate I'm a manager I understand that. But the HR guys I know hate seeing gaps and don't ask those people in for interviews.
Plus a ton of places in our company do workshops instead which makes it more difficult for the new applicants to make an impression; instead of 1 on 1 time with the manager(s) deciding they get lumped in a group and do group activities. Some people naturally work better on their own; I mean my department is all about solo deliveries so I don't see why the HR guys insist on teamworking skills; we give these cunts a van-full of shit and tell them to drop it off at shops.
