I don't think that's a strong argument, considering extreme free market also has done really badly.
Instead, I think a stronger argument would be one that comes from necessary implications of the definition of "socialism".
Socialism fails to acknowledge that some people are naturally good workers and some others just fucking suck, and because of that it gets bogged the fuck down with everybody's bullshit. Paying your own way (except for the gubbmint providing a little bit here and there) is a hell of a lot better than trying to pool everyone's shit together and redistribute it.
Personally I'd like it if we could do something about huge corporations taking advantage of everybody, something that Marx does point out, but trying to buttfuck your entire country into hell isn't how you'd go about it. I'd rather just have free market with much more severe limitations on how large companies can get.
