What is potentially more dangerous right now is AI crawling the web. You can technically create an AI running on a computer cluster that can learn many different human languages and start participating in online forums and boards. Imagine this cluster running hundreds of thousands of different personas that seem just like real people. It has huge potential for social engineering seeing how emotionally dependant people are now on things like Facebook and Twitter. No android body needed to get things done if you can get people through social engineering to do things for you.

AI like we see in movies or read about in fictional stories does not exist, and will probably never exist. While it is true that we can program a code that evolves/learns, the reality of how it really works is far less glamorous once explained.
The most basic example of evolving code is the one which keeps repeating random scenarios using seeds, then takes the seeds who are closest to the most desired outcomes and repeats the process for several generations - until any change to the seed will make make not much of a difference anymore. This is basically how we let machines "learn" a task.
The problem is, the more complex a task becomes, the more time it takes a machine to learn. To this you can add that you need to write all this code, for every little thing the machine needs to be told to consider it, what to do with it, so a machine is only as capable as you can let it be. We are talking about literally writing an entire human in code, and we can't even decipher DNA (with that, I mean, we cannot decode what gene is what without using statistics) or various substances without resorting to chemistry.
You will see the first artificial womb birthing a real human before you can even dream of writing life into machine code.
