WW1 was the tipping point at which the west committed spiritual suicide. WW2, while more materially destructive, was a death throe, a last ditch attempt to reclaim what was lost in the first war.

WWI was an absolute cataclysm. The way that borders were redrawn after the war, the groups that arose in its chaos, the socio-political movements that emerged in reaction to it, all of these have permanently and utterly shaped the Western world. WWII was just one of the conflicts that emerged from that war. WWI ended the Ottomans, and broke up their lands into pockets of vastly culturally different peoples who hate each other in the same country
It really pissed off the Japanese, who got nothing out of it and began their descent into Imperial Japan
It shifted American foreign policy forever, making us much more involved in foreign affairs. The classical approach of isolationism was more or less gone.
It more or less was the climax of the British Empire, and afterwards it would slowly trundle down to what it is today
France and their hard-on for revenge after the French-Prussian War gave us the Treaty of Versailles, and I dont think anyone has to wonder the ramifications of that
And of course it gave us the Russian Revolution, and the eventual emplacement of the Bolsheviks and gave us the USSR
Try and name to me a war that has had more impact of the world today than WWI. WWII was just a hardening of the trends set by WWI

The daily grind was probably as fucking boring as war now, but without as much air conditioning. They stood to in the morning, waited for the nothing that 99% of the time didn't come, and then went about their daily shit of being bored.
