The officers were issued ceremonial katanas. As the war progressed they said fuck it and started making them out of train tracks as it was a waste of time and resources to make them properly when the most action they'd see would be ensuring you or your troops didn't get captured.

My grandfather was in WW2 and fought the japs in the philippines. He NEVER talked about it, but had mention something once to my father about them having swords. He drove a tank and at night they would round the tanks in a circle. The guys would sit inside the circle and play cards, and literally these Japs "would come out from the bushes with swords" and they would "just blow them away". It's pretty crazy.

He said they had stacks of them on the beach and guys were grabbing them as they got on the boats to leave the island (Luzon, I think). He sold them when I was a kid. The Samurai didn't official "End" until 1868.
During WWII, there were still a couple of really old Samurai around, and plenty of Japanese that still lived the lifestyle of their fathers and grandfathers despite it no longer being allowed.
There was actually one Jap after WWII that continued to act as a Samurai. This fucker was lost in the jungles of the Philippines during the war and continued to do the Samurai thing in isolation for 30 years because he assumed the war was still going on. Committed close to 30 murders with his Katana and nothing else in that time period and didn't stop until someone informed him that the war ended three decades ago.
The Samurai way of life wasn't fully extinguished until America came in and knocked Japan's dick into the dirt and put up all of those sanctions.
