I work with someone who used to teach at an inner city school in new york.

Now from what I have heard from him is that their school tried to have a computer lab, but all the computers were stolen with in 2 weeks of receiving them. Apparently this happened in several schools within the district. The school district completely abandoned the idea because dey be raycis

Right. So we shouldn't bother teaching anyone computer science. It's a total waste of time. Hell, let's drop reading too, because it doesn't have a 100% success rate, so fuck it. And math. Not everyone does well in math, so teaching that is a failure, clearly.
You know what? Let's scrap education all together. Kids should be sent to factories and mines.

I didn't see "only inner city schools should learn computer science".

I saw "every child should". And every child should. Whether they actually take advantage of it or not, programming and other basic computer skills aren't optional in today's world. Not only that but it teaches important logic and problem solving skills. It's a good idea. If Trump had proposed it, you'd all be jerking off to the idea of Biff and Buffy from Suburbiaville learning Python. But since Clinton said it, you assume it's exclusively an "inner city" school program.

You don't dislike the idea. You dislike the messenger.

Programming, by it's very nature teaches Boolean logic and problem solving skills. Learning the basics of logic is a day one skill. You can't even do the simplest comparative statement if you don't know basic logic.

But tell me more about how a theoretical computer science education would work in a country you know nothing about outside of what you read on the internet. You're obviously an expert.

First you said that Computer Scientists don't know shit about math, and I pointed out Alan Turing, a pioneer of CS and a Computer Scientist by definition.

Then you said that CS is trivial, and I pointed out the P=NP problem (there are others, by the way).

Now you're backpedaling even more.

I get it, now. Your unwarranted distaste for CS is because you dropped out. What, was Calc II too difficult for you? Or did you meet some neckbeard who could code in C who knew nothing about data structures call himself a 'computer scientist' and ruined the image for you?
Whatever the case, you're letting your personal feelings dictate your rational thinking.

A* isn't a tree. It's a tree search algorithm though.

Binary trees don't have enough structure to be useful. Just use a linear list of some sort. Binary search trees enforce some criteria that speed up performance under searching (assuming the tree is somewhat balanced). AVL trees have further structure that guarantee a good level of balance, as do AA.

If you code something more important than simple web apps data structures matter.

I have an MS in compsci.

Atm, I work as a security engineer for a large financial firm.

Basically, programming is a tool. Software engineering is a whole other beast. Automotive workers don't feel threatened every time someone learns to use a wrench, grinder or torch; it's basically the same thing with programming.

But a cs degree is so much more than learning to code, it's learning networking, operating systems, machine learning, AI, security, algorithms, web development, etc, etc.

ANYONE who tells who that a (CS degree == learning to program) just doesn't know what they are talking about. It's as simple as that.

I an highly in favor of teaching HS students a programming language (python or java maybe), because it opens the door to a technical way of thinking which is valuable is many industries.

1st semester: Learned Java
2nd semester: Learned data structures
3rd: Learned probability theory, statistics and CS principals
4th: Learned discrete math (for proofs, etc), and hardware architecture (including x86 and ARM assembly language)
5th: Learned Networking and Algorithms (asymptotic runtime analysis)
6th: Learned Operating systems (not like, how to use windows, more like "how to schedule a cpu, how to work with virtual memory, how to do paging, how to work with multithreading, etc)
7th: Learned Security principals and Web programming (HTML and CSS were one lecture, most of it was spent learning front and backend JS frameworks)
8th: Advanced Security principals (pen testing, sys admin stuff, e-cash security, etc)

Hope this helps!

Oh, I forgot to mention, along the way you are just expected to pick up more languages as you go!

The basic idea is that once you get one language (in the C-family) than other languages you can just learn along the way.

I ended up learning:
1. Java
2. JS
3. C
4. C++
5. Assembly (x86/arm)
6. python
7. Scala
8. R if you count R.

Thanks for telling everyone you don't know jack shit.
I don't see a Data Structures requirement.
I don't see an Algorithms requirement.
I don't see a Discrete Math requirement.
I don't even see the Calc 1, 2, and 3 requirement. In my university, linear algebra and Differential Equations are also required for a batchelor's.
And Theory of computation, too.

You're conveniently leaving all of this and more out, to fulfill your predisposed narrative about CS majors. Fuck, I'll post a problem from my discrete math classes. I dare you to solve it if you think you're smarter than a CS major.

Learning a language like python is pretty easy.

I think it's a worthwile introduction to technical thinking that most students could benefit from. As long as you don't teach them C, then it's high-level enough to bot get to confusing.

Computer Science major at a university here.

Being a CompSci Major, so far I've had classes that covered:
>Building a compiler
>Building a kernel
>Data structures
>Database management
>Logic and Algorithms

On top of calculus, mathematical proofs, and statistics.
And I still have another year to go.

Compsci is NOT "hurr durr how to use excel" or "hurr durr write hello world".

Fuck yes I'm triggered.

also; I cant imagine a situation where you couldnt teach yourself basic languages like most everyone in Compsci in one fashion or another. Computer science is a terrible name for this business. First of all, it's not a science. It might be engineering, or it might be art. Actually, computer -so called- science has a lot in common with magic. So, it's not a science. It's also not really very much about computers. And it's not about computers in the same sense that physics is not really about particle accelerators and biology is not really about microscopes and petri dishes.

It's very easy to confuse the essence of what you're doing with the tools that you use. And indeed, on some absolute scale of things, we probably know less about the essence of computer science than the ancient Egyptians really knew about geometry.

Well, what do I mean by the essence of computer science? What do I mean by the essence of geometry? See, it's certainly true that these Egyptians went off and used surveying instruments, but when we look back on them after a couple of thousand years, we say, gee, what they were doing, the important stuff they were doing, was to begin to formalize notions about space and time, to start a way of talking about mathematical truths formally.

Like the study of mathematics and physics in relation to logic to create digital circuits and systems.

Programming isn't computer science. There's no science involved in learning how to program a video game. Most programmers couldn't tell you how the fuck about the fetch execute cycle of a CPU.
