I make a living as a military contractor. To be honest, besides more training, steroids, booze, and hookers, a lot of guys in this industry drop a considerable portion of their pay on equipment that they think gives them better capability. Some of it stupid, some of it useful. Now a lot of contract locations have very limited packing lists due to local laws, but some don't. It's funny because you see a lot of guys with a lot of latest mail order shit when they're on contract.
Our job is almost always protecting a noun. While things like daggers are kinda useless in my profession, everyone I know carries at least one blade. The blade was the first tool invented after the club, the blade has been and continues to be the most useful tool.
