Portuguese speakers from our islands also sound like dogshit. Madeira is pretty bad, but bearable. Azores is just plain shit and most speakers won't understand a word of it, even though it's the same language.

There is no such thing as "having an accent". There is only speaking correctly, and not speaking correctly. Every word in every language has exactly one, precise, correct method of being pronounced, and if you don't pronounce it that way, you're wrong.
For example, the word "no" in English has one consonant and one vowel. If you pronounce it with multiple vowel sounds or with an r-ish sound at the end, it's wrong. One consonant, one vowel.
If you "have an accent", you are not speaking the language correctly.

It happens most with "a" sounds, for instance if I ask for garlic dip at a pizza place the guy will ask me to repeat myself if I say "GAR-lick" because he's used to "GAAH-lick". I also half to switch to the British pronunciation of "half" if I'm asking for a half pint at a pub and its noisy because the barkeep will think I'm saying I want to "have" a pint.
