An article I read a while ago said that Putin was going to create Kurdistan and use it as a buffer country to drastically cut off Turkish influence from the Middle East, which would allow the Russian-controlled Syria-Iraq-Iran block to intimidate Saudi Arabi into submission.
The idea is that Turks won't be able to attack Kurdistan because they have a large amount of Kurdish separatists themselves, which in addition to Russian support, would guarantee that Turks lose half their country in any attempt of messing up with the Middle East again.
If this is the case, then Syria will comply with their Russian overlords. And Iraq and Iran might give-in too.

Russia itself hasn't the power projection to keep so many factors at bay. The reason why Russia promised the kurds their clay is because so they stay "friendly". The US did the very same thing. Turkey killed over 4000 PKK fighters and the PKK is too exhausted to fight a big fight anymore, the Ankara suicide bombings proove that. A kurdish state in northern Syria means the balkanization of Syria which Assad and Russia fought tooth and nail to prevent it. Assad wont allow that and I wouldn't be suprised when Assad and Erdogan become "buddies" over night again.
