It's beyond question that putting human beings on another celestial body has been the highlight of human achievement so far (besides rising from our primitive and shitstained origins, obv).
What do you think will be the next unequivocally "greatest achievement" or milestone we reach within our lifetimes?
Personally I'm partial to the creation of an Artificial General Intelligence capable of passing the Turing test (and not murdering us for our atoms) or creating a viable star ship with an Alcubierre drive capable of reaching other star systems in a reasonable amount of time. A lasting world peace would be cool too tho.
Massively available VR at the Fisher Price level to the points that women are absolutely BTFO'd by the ai sexbot boom
Next achievement:
Turn civilisation to dumpship, fuck ourself, and let rodents and cockroach dominate the world.

Lol, why would either of these be reasonably considered mankind's newest highlight/"greatest achievement" though?

It'd result in a third world war, but... It'd be good.
It wouldn't be gone forever if it did die however. Someone would build another one. And another one. And another one.
Eventually we'd just succumb to our literal AI overlord and go into a complete socialist economy and style of government.

OK, but it had to exist first, right?
The fact that you and I are even interacting at all, is a huge fucking deal. I feel like you're taking it for granted, even though this conversation was literally facilitated by it. Imagine trying to pose this philosophical conversation only to the people in your immediate vicinity?
We've made it so ideas can reach almost anyone in a ridiculously short amount of time. It's the first stop on a journey to having all of our minds linked, to each of us becoming neurons in a brain larger than any of us. The internet is already that to some degree, there's just currently a limit to what can be expressed, how it can be consumed, and how fast.
If you still disagree with me, try forgetting that you ever read this post, today, or for the rest of your life. And yet I'm over here and you're way over there.
Landing on the moon was an impressive technological and logistic feat. But the Internet is/was a game-changer. Our lives revolve around it.

Society seems to idolize physical achievement over intellectual achievement.
While just a year or so ago we've confirmed the existence of the Higgg's boson very few people idolize it as a crowning achievement of humanity, although it was on the scale of effort a much bigger project than going to the moon.
So I guess based on this presumption of human appreciation of achievement the next thing will have to be sending humans to Mars or something along those lines.
