Escalation would only work to Trump's favor. The lower the bar for conduct goes the more outlandish Trump's claims and positions can become and the more anger he can channel. He's an idiot if he thinks the media can win a verbal pissing match with Trump. The route to beating Trump was dragging him away from his main talking points and steering him into contradicting himself or unknowingly backing down on his positions since he just wings pretty much all his public speaking.
